The Kollam (also called Quilon) district is located at the southwest coast of India. It's just north of Thiruvananthapuram , the capital city. The district has two rivers Kallada and Ithikkara. The vast freshwater lake, Sasthamcotta, is located in Kollam. The district enjoys a tropical humid climate along with most of the rest of the state of Kerala. Tourists consider Kollam to be a good entry point to the backwaters, if traveling from south.
